Understanding Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP)

Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) is a transformational form of talk therapy that combines neuroscience, attachment theory, and emotion-focused practices. Developed by psychologist Diana Fosha, it focuses on helping individuals and couples overcome trauma, grief, and deep emotional wounds through experiential psychotherapy.

As trauma can alter the brain structure, AEDP uses the brain’s neuroplasticity to facilitate healing, emotional regulation, and positive change. It counters feelings of isolation caused by trauma with corrective emotional experiences rooted in safety, trust, and emotional connection between therapist and client.

AEDP therapists work with the client to build a secure attachment within their therapeutic alliance. From this foundation, they help clients feel that they’re not alone, validate their emotional experiences, and support their emotional growth. In Estes Therapy, we offer AEDP therapy in San Diego to help our clients deepen their sense of well-being, resilience, and emotional clarity.

When AEDP Therapy is Used: Healing Relationships, Trauma, and Emotional Challenges

AEDP is useful in a range of settings, from individual therapy to relationship counseling, as its experiential and emotionally focused approach makes it adaptable to the specific needs of people, enabling them to achieve meaningful change.

What AEDP is Originally Used For

AEDP was designed initially to treat trauma, especially childhood trauma and PTSD. It helps clients process experiences of neglect or being raised by emotionally distant caregivers—addressing the impact of early relational wounds on present-day emotional health and attachment patterns.

Because it reduces symptoms commonly related to trauma, AEDP also helps with depression, anxiety, and interpersonal difficulties, especially for people who feel emotionally stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected from their inner self or relationships.

Adaptable for Many Therapeutic Services

In couples and family therapies, AEDP is used to rebuild emotional bonds and foster secure attachments for couples that are impacted by trust issues, emotional distance, or unresolved trauma between partners. By encouraging open emotional expression and attuned communication, AEDP helps romantic and family relationships build back secure attachments.

How AEDP Therapists Guide Clients
Toward Growth and Emotional Strength

A core wound of many clients due to trauma or emotional neglect is emotional isolation. AEDP therapists work to undo this feeling of isolation by providing a private and supportive space to help clients move from feeling overwhelmed to feeling understood.

By fostering a secure therapeutic relationship with the client, clients can feel more confident in exploring difficult emotions and relational patterns.

How AEDP Stands Out From Other Therapeutic Approaches

AEDP sessions focus on helping clients experience and process core emotions rather than avoiding or numbing them. However, going through core emotions can be overwhelming for the client.

With their therapeutic bond, AEDP therapists guide clients through both painful and positive emotional experiences, including moments of joy, relief, and self-compassion, to reinforce emotional safety.

The Science Behind AEDP

As the brain’s structure can be altered by trauma, AEDP utilizes positive emotional experiences to stimulate the brain’s neuroplasticity, creating long-term change. Clients build psychological resilience and reconnect with a deeper sense of self and purpose as they access and integrate these healing experiences—with many clients reporting feeling more grounded, open, and emotionally connected in their daily lives.

“I wanted to leave a review for my therapist, Sarah. I’ve been going to therapy for many years and have had good experiences, but my sessions with her have by far been the most impactful. Working with [Sarah] has made me feel equipped to tackle life’s most challenging circumstances, and I cannot express my gratitude enough. Do yourself a favor and get in to see her. “I worked with Lauryn Plush for a little over two years, and I can say that she is, without a doubt, one of the most caring and empathetic people I have ever met. Being lucky enough to work with Lauryn showed me that she is truly a one-of-a-kind listener, and I would not refer any of my friends or family to anyone but Lauryn for couples and single counseling.”

Frequently Asked Questions for AEDP Therapy

When is AEDP Not Applicable?

While AEDP therapy can be deeply transformative, it may not be the best approach for everyone. Individuals experiencing severe emotional dysregulation—those operating outside their window of tolerance—may need a different type of therapeutic support first.
AEDP is generally not recommended for those dealing with:

Active suicidality (Please call 1-888-724-7240 or 988 for San Diego crisis hotline services)

  • Psychosis
  • Untreated addiction
  • Bipolar disorder (in unmanaged phases)
  • Moderate to severe autism spectrum diagnoses

Additionally, individuals in immediate crisis, such as those experiencing violence in their relationship, should seek urgent support from crisis specialists or emergency services before beginning AEDP.

In a transdiagnostic study, researchers found that 62 adults from five countries who completed 16 sessions of AEDP therapy showed clinically significant change, including those with severe or complex mental health challenges. Improved self-compassion and well-being are maintained over 12 months, with benefits sustained.

AEDP is typically recognized as a valid mental health treatment, although coverage varies by provider. Check your insurance plan for session length limits and eligibility. At Estes Therapy, we don’t accept insurance; however, we do provide Superbills to help you submit therapy costs for reimbursement to your provider.
