Relationship Therapy in San Diego for Stronger Connections

Relationship Counseling in San Diego for Individuals and All Relationship Structures
At Estes Therapy, we provide relationship counseling in San Diego, California.
Whether the partners are married, unmarried, open, ENM, or of any arrangement, they all experience conflicts that impact their relationship. However, when couples face challenges together as a team, they come out of it stronger. Part of facing conflicts as a unit is finding the help they need.
That’s why, at Estes Therapy, we guide partners in any form of relationship on how to move forward and address difficult issues affecting their relationship. Through professional and compassionate care, we help couples uncover the root of the issues and empower them with tools and techniques to communicate constructively and rebuild a stronger, more connected relationship.
Our Compassionate Approach to Relationship Counseling
Our experienced and licensed marriage and family therapists specialize in relationship counseling using Emotional Focused Therapy (EFT), a research-backed approach grounded in the psychology of attachment bonds. EFT helps people strengthen their connection by:
- Identifying and reshaping unhelpful communication patterns
- Reducing emotional reactivity and fostering active listening
- Creating a safe emotional space where change to all partners can express their deeper, more vulnerable feelings
In addition to EFT, we also incorporate other evidence-based approaches to help partners change and reach their goals:
- Gottman Method Couples Therapy, which focuses on nine key components of healthy relationships to strengthen emotional bonds and enhance long-term connection
- Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), a healing-centered modality that allows relationship members to support each other in processing trauma—whether experienced within or outside the relationship—while deepening emotional intimacy

Counseling or Therapy—We Provide Both to Support Your Relationships
While relationship counseling and therapy are used interchangeably, the two differ. Both are beneficial for partners to rekindle their connection and strengthen their relationships.
However, relationship counseling is for more than two people in the relationship. That’s why we offer different therapy services for people of all walks of life:
When married and unmarried couples face conflicts, couples therapy helps them overcome issues as a team and strengthen their bond.
LGBTQ couples therapy sees relationships through the queer lens, creating an affirming and safe environment for LGBTQIA+ couples.
Polyamory therapy guides members in open relationships, ENM partners, swingers, and more in navigating the unique challenges they face in their bonds.
Build a strong foundation for marriage by aligning values and goals before tying the knot with premarital counseling.
Healing can be difficult when trust has been betrayed. Having a mental health professional act as a mediator in infidelity and affair counseling can help parties mend their relationship stronger than ever before.
Whether amicable or not, divorce is a stressful and significant change in people’s lives. Through divorce counseling, we help relationship participants or individuals navigate and heal from divorce trauma.
What Relationship Counseling with Estes Therapy Can Do For You
Our therapists provide a safe and judgment-free space for people in relationships to explore their minds and emotions on the issues impacting their relationship. As a neutral third party, your assigned relationship counselor at Estes Therapy can listen to all sides with impartial and unbiased feedback to help everyone involved see the relationship through a new lens.
From there, you can reap the following benefits of our relationship counseling:
Strengthen Communication and Understanding
Relationship counseling provides a supportive space for everyone to objectively explore both sides of a disagreement and uncover the root causes of conflict. Many relationship challenges stem from unhealthy patterns and dynamics that have developed over time. Through guided insight, your therapist will help you recognize these unhelpful cycles and replace them with healthier, more constructive communication skills.
Improve Intimacy and Emotional Responsiveness
Counseling can help reignite that connection by improving communication, rebuilding mutual respect, and refocusing on each other’s wants, needs, and desires. When we feel truly seen, heard, and loved, we naturally become more in tune with our partners—laying the foundation for deeper emotional and physical intimacy.
Develop Healthy Conflict Resolution Skills
Not many of us have positive models for health conflict resolution skills. We naturally see the other person as the problem, and conflicts then become questions of who is right or wrong. Through relationship counseling, all parties can learn effective tools to navigate and resolve conflicts more constructively. These include:
- Using “I” statements, which help you express your feelings and needs from your own perspective—reducing blame and defensiveness.
- Listening to understand, where each partner practices active listening by restating or reframing what they’ve heard to ensure clarity and mutual understanding.
Get Emotional Clarity About Your Relationship
There are times when parties come for relationship counseling to understand what they want in a relationship. They come for us with reasons like:
- They wonder if the relationship is salvageable.
- They want to do everything possible for the relationship to work and they and their partner will stay together.
- They feel anxiety about what and who they would lose if the relationship ends.
No matter the outcome, relationship counseling offers a space to explore your needs, emotions, and sense of fulfillment within the partnership. Some may realize that continuing the relationship may not be the right path—and that’s okay. What’s most important is gaining emotional clarity. Counseling helps both partners understand whether it’s best to part ways amicably or to identify what’s needed to rebuild and strengthen the relationship moving forward.
