Military Family Therapy in San Diego, CA

Estes Therapy offers specialized family therapy for military personnel and their loved ones. A career in the armed forces can affect not only the service member but also their spouse, children, and extended family—both during active duty and beyond. Our military family therapy is designed to address these unique challenges, focusing on strengthening relationships and supporting the mental health of the entire family. Since we are a cash pay practice, we do this differently than the therapy offered on-base. We are confidential and do not have to share your information with the commanding officer.

Located in San Diego, California, our licensed therapists are here to help military families adjust to life transitions, navigate parenting challenges, and foster resilience together.

Why Our Military Family Therapy Program Makes a Difference

At Estes Therapy, our sessions are collaborative, welcoming, and paced to match the unique needs of you and your family. We don’t rely on surface-level solutions or quick fixes—instead, we work with you to uncover and address the root causes of your challenges. Our goal is to support lasting change that continues well beyond the therapy room. The talks can get difficult, but overcoming them with the mediation skills of a mental health professional rewards families with a better understanding of each other and healthier relationships.

How Family Therapy Supports Military Families Through Real-Life Challenges

Military duties affect all areas of life, from work to home to personal relationships. Whether we like it or not, it causes a ripple effect on the people closest to them, including their spouse and children. Our family military therapy in San Diego, CA, helps service members and their families address the following challenges that they may face:

Common Issues Faced by Military Couples

What Military Couples Face

Service members, veterans, and their partners often face unique challenges–deployment transitions, grief, permanent change of station (PCS), combat trauma and military sexual assault, and workplace stress can put individual emotional strains on both partners, especially when distance creates feelings of isolation or disconnection.

How Military Family Therapy Can Help

Military family therapy offers vital support, helping couples address the ruptures, manage stress, improve communication, and navigate life’s transitions with greater resilience and understanding.

How Military Life Can Impact Children

Military Family Syndrome Explained

Military Family Syndrome refers to a range of emotional and behavioral symptoms experienced by children in military families. Frequent relocations, parental deployment, and disrupted routines can interfere with the consistency and stability that children need to thrive. These challenges may lead to symptoms such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, behavioral issues, and poor academic performance.

How Military Family Therapy Can Help

Military family therapy offers a supportive space where children can process their emotions, build resilience, and develop healthy coping strategies to navigate the unique stressors of military life.

Deployment and Early Childhood

Understanding Developmental Effects

The deployment of a parent during early childhood can significantly impact a young child’s emotional and developmental well-being. Children may experience symptoms such as appetite loss, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and even developmental delays.

How Military Family Therapy Can Help

Early intervention through military family counseling can make a meaningful difference, helping young children process their experiences, learn how to talk about their emotions, and fostering healthier long-term outcomes.

Family Counseling Services That Support Healing and Growth

Estes Therapy in San Diego, CA, empowers military families through compassionate support and tailored guidance. With therapy grounded in trust, safety, and connection, we foster a supportive environment for families to grow stronger together with open communication and healthy coping skills.

Helping Military Families Cope, Connect, and Heal Together

Loss, grief, and other massive life changes can isolate family members as they struggle to adapt and remain strong. A family member who got deployed to the war zone can cause anxiety for their spouse and children. Military family therapy helps everyone feel seen and heard while learning how to reconnect, process difficult events, and heal together.

Addressing Mental Health and Behavioral Concerns in the Family Unit

When a person is diagnosed with anxiety, depression, and other mental health and behavioral conditions, they’re not the only one affected. For example, a veteran may be diagnosed with drug abuse disorder. The loved ones around them experience stress, helplessness, and anxiety about how to care for them moving forward; better yet, it takes them off line and they become unavailable for the family.

Therapy benefits everyone by helping them understand their conditions, educating them on how to support each other, and get them the proper support they need to get back online for the family or to stabilize and learn how to show up in a healthier way.

Resolving Family Conflicts and Strengthening Relationships

Military responsibilities can significantly strain family dynamics, sometimes leading to emotional distance, tension, or estrangement. For example, a military spouse may feel resentment for carrying the brunt of home responsibilities for years. The loneliness can cause a sense of feeling as if they are on their own and can't count on their partner. Resentment builds, intimacy decreases, and emotional shutdowns occur. Your military family therapist provides a safe space to explore the root causes of these conflicts and helps families heal from the experience, learn how to trust in one another, and shift from negative patterns to healthier communication and conflict resolution strategies.

“I worked with Lauryn Plush for a little over two years, and I can say that she is, without a doubt, one of the most caring and empathetic people I have ever met. Being lucky enough to work with Lauryn showed me that she is truly a one-of-a-kind listener, and I would not refer any of my friends or family to anyone but Lauryn for couples and single counseling.”

Our Military Family Counseling Process

At Estes Therapy, your assigned therapist may recommend a combination of individual and family sessions to gain a comprehensive understanding of each family member’s perspective. As a neutral, third-party mental health professional, the therapist’s role is to guide the family toward shared goals by tailoring a treatment plan that meets everyone’s unique needs.

Military family counseling typically involves 6 to 12 sessions, each lasting 45 to 60 minutes. However, therapy may extend over several months if the issues are more complex and require deeper exploration. For your convenience, we offer both in-person sessions at our San Diego office and secure online therapy options.

While we do not accept insurance directly, we provide detailed SuperBills—itemized documents that can be submitted to Tricare and other insurance providers for potential reimbursement.
