Why Estes Therapy Stands Out in Family Counseling

Estes Therapy was founded and owned by Jennine Estes Powell, LMFT, who co-authored Help for High-Conflict Couples. Using her expertise in conflict resolution, she helps people from all walks of life improve communication that fosters healing, growth, and understanding.

At Estes Therapy, we are a diverse and qualified team that gives our clients the tools they can use long after therapy. We are here to get to the root of the problem that has led your family to seek treatment. Each family has different experiences. We tailor every counseling session to address each family’s unique needs and goals.

Addressing Your Family’s Challenges Together

Family therapy isn’t a magic wand that makes everything bad disappear. It also doesn’t involve finding out who’s at fault. Rather, family therapy is about confronting a problem as a team. When problems are addressed together, it reshapes relationships and dynamics where everyone feels seen, heard, and appreciated. Here are some shared struggles and individual concerns that we help families with.

Strained Relationships and
Communication Issues

Strained relationships are caused by dynamics where family members don’t feel seen, heard, or valued. It risks a broken marriage, fall-outs, and children developing behavioral problems. Family therapy allows each member’s perspective to be heard. It acknowledges each member’s frustration and pain. From there, the therapist helps the family rebuild trust and improve active listening.

Trauma (Physical or Emotional)

When an individual undergoes a traumatic event, their family can also be affected. While the individual is suffering from trauma, their family is also worried about how they can help. A licensed therapist helps family members create a supportive environment for the affected individual while they receive proper care to process things.

Death or Dying of a Loved One

Grief for death or dying can take a toll on a family. Older members struggle to deal with their grief while handling their daily responsibilities. Younger members act out, wanting control over things they cannot. Family counseling provides tools for all members on how to cope with grief and anxiety as a family unit.

Coping with Significant Changes, Like Divorce, Incarceration, or Illness

Significant changes can shake family foundations. Divorce, incarceration, and diagnosed illnesses and disorders can affect families emotionally and practically. Family therapy helps members adjust to the changes and find stability from an emotionally healthy perspective.

Addressing Mental Health or Behavioral Concerns

When a member is struggling with mental health or behavioral concerns, the family may not know how to care for them while still caring for themselves. Whether a child has a behavioral disorder or a member has a substance abuse disorder, a family therapist can empower members with support and tools.

Benefits of Family Therapy with Estes Therapy

Family counseling zooms out to view the family as a dynamic and interconnected system. This form of therapy involves everyone—parents, siblings, and even extended relatives—to strengthen relationships and address challenges. When families engage in therapy, they can experience meaningful change, improved communication, and healthier dynamics.

Encourage Open Communication
and Active Listening

In family therapy, we create a culture of openness as a foundational step toward resolving issues. Our therapists focus on developing active listening and communication skills. These tools foster trust and allow everyone to be heard. Families walk away with better techniques to navigate difficult conversations and rebuild connections.

Clarify Everyone’s Words and
Feelings for Better Understanding

One of the most critical goals of family counseling is helping family members understand and validate each other’s perspectives. At Estes Therapy, we provide the care and tools to reframe difficult conversations. Our licensed and verified therapists assist families in clarifying words and emotions to avoid misunderstandings.

Help Family Members Understand the Impact of Their Words and Behaviors

Therapists help family members understand how their words and behaviors affect each other. They help identify patterns that cause harm and bring them to light. Family therapy helps members develop self-awareness and accountability. A therapist can help members reflect on their actions and communicate responsibly.

Tailor Strategies to Change Problematic Behaviors and Patterns

Every family is unique. Estes Therapy identifies problematic behaviors and patterns that impact family dynamics. Through consistent care and targeted strategies, families develop the skills to replace harmful behaviors with positive, lasting change.

“I worked with Lauryn Plush for a little over two years, and I can say that she is, without a doubt, one of the most caring and empathetic people I have ever met. Being lucky enough to work with Lauryn showed me that she is truly a one-of-a-kind listener, and I would not refer any of my friends or family to anyone but Lauryn for couples and single counseling.”

How Family Therapy Works and What to Expect

Family therapy is similar to group therapy, in which more than one individual participates. Each family member will be asked for their perspective on the issue that has made them seek treatment. The therapist helps each member see the role they have to play in the family as a whole while gaining insights into who they are as an individual.

Family therapy in Estes Therapy Oceanside can last 6 to 12 sessions or more, depending on the issues’ complexity. Each session can last from 45 to 60 minutes.
