Surviving the Holidays

Posted by: Jennine Estes | Comments (0)

Among the strain finances, family issues, in-laws, and typical interpersonal stressors put on any type of relationship be it straight, gay, familial, romantic, or friendly, the holidays can put additional pressure on existing issues: gift-giving, decorating, party planning, vacation arrangements, etc. During the eventful months leading up to the new year, many relationships under this kind of adversity will be put to the test.

Consider the following suggestions to help keep your relationships strong during this time and all year long:

  1. Compromise. Alternate whose side of the family you spend certain celebrations with.
  2. Be Inventive. Create traditions of your own to tighten the bolts on your relationship.
  3. Formulate a “game plan” and work as a team to stick to it.
  4. Delegate jobs. Ensure both people are doing their equal part in planning and execution.
  5. Respect each other’s differences.
  6. Take the time to relax by way of meditation, breathing exercises, etc.
  7. Avoid “venting” to your partner about their parents. Instead, have a sit-down and keep an open mind while discussing any problems you may have with your partner’s family.
  8. Focus on what is most important in the relationship. Let the small stuff fall to the wayside.
